Governor I Made Mangku Pastika is considering whether to reintroduce weigh stations to check truck weights, because of “excessive” road and bridge damage blamed on overloaded trucks.

He said continual overloading of trucks, which operators could do because there were no weigh stations to catch them, was a problem that needed to be fixed.

This was especially so because many roads used by tourists were badly damaged by heavy trucks, leading to safety complaints from visitors.

The provincial government funds maintenance work on 800 kilometres of provincial roads and some minor roads leading to tourist attractions.
