MANGUPURA – Despite the presence of local regulations (Perda), rabies cases in Bali remain high. The Local Government is facing considerable challenges in handling the situation. Badung Regent, I Nyoman Giri Prasta, has assigned the Department of Agriculture and Food (Disperpa) to coordinate with the animal health division to anticipate rabies cases. This includes the formation of the Rabies Alert Team (Tisira) and vaccination for Rabies-Transmitting Animals (HPR).
Furthermore, he appreciates the existence of shelters established by the community in the Badung area for abandoned animals.
“We are grateful to the community, especially the people of Badung, who have built shelters for these stray dogs,” he stated after the Badung Regional People’s Representative Council (DPRD) Plenary Meeting on Thursday (20/7/2023).
The Head of Disperpa in Badung Regency, I Wayan Wijana, mentioned that shelters are located in the South Kuta and Abiansemal areas.
“There are shelters in the South Kuta and Abiansemal areas. They are privately owned by individuals who genuinely care for animals,” he said yesterday (22/7).
Previously, he mentioned that the Badung Regency Government would collaborate with the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine (FKH) to establish shelters. However, no further plans have been made due to the lack of appropriate locations.
“We haven’t made any plans yet because there are no suitable locations. We are still hopeful for a collaboration with FKH Unud,” he added.
Regarding rabies vaccination coverage in Badung as of (21/7), it stands at 91.74 percent or 81,656 animals. Disperpa Badung also pays special attention to tourist areas such as Sangeh, where rabies vaccination coverage in the village has reached 80 percent.
Meanwhile, the manager of Badak Agung Denpasar area, Inti, is actively involved in creating shelters for dogs and cats. They not only accommodate dogs but also take care of sick dogs.
“We also take in sick dogs to care for them,” said Inti (23/7/2023).
As they have recently become active, they have only taken in dozens of dogs and cats at the shelter, which was established using their own funds.
