Missing Tourist Appears

VIENNA ~ An Austrian tourist who went missing for a week in Sumatra resurfaced on Wednesday, Austrian Foreign Affairs spokeswoman Astrid Harz said.

Franz Resch, 46, from Attersee in Upper Austria had lost his way while trekking in the jungle due to bad weather and was only able to make his way back to civilization on Wednesday, Harz said.

He alerted local police around 1:30pm after reaching the village of Sibolangit, media reports said.

An Austrian Foreign Ministry representative who was in Indonesia spoke with Resch and was expected to meet him, Harz said.

Resch had set off alone to climb the jungle-clad 2,174-metre Mount Sibayak on January 23 and was reported missing three days later by staff at the hotel where he was staying when he failed to return.

His disappearance led to a widespread search by the authorities.
