Election Commissioners Jailed

Election Commissioners Jailed

JAKARTA ~ Two members of the General Election Commission were jailed on Wednesday over a corruption case during the 2004 polls.

Mulyana W. Kusuma and R.M. Purba were sentenced to 15 months for corruption over the tender to procure ballot boxes for the elections, the official Antara news agency reported.

“The panel of judges have decided that the two accused are guilty of corruption by benefiting other parties or corporations,” judge Moerdiono was quoted as saying.

However the two were not proven to have benefited themselves in awarding the contract.

Last year, commission chairman Nazaruddin Sjamsuddin was sentenced to seven years’ jail in a high-profile corruption case that emerged after the 2004 polls.

There have been a series of such cases as President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono seeks to clean up corruption.
