Viral Video: Ubud Money Changer Caught Cheating by Foreign Tourist

UBUD, Bali – A money changer in Ubud, Gianyar, was caught cheating a foreign tourist — and the act was recorded on video that quickly went viral on social media. The footage shows the staff secretly dropping several bills under the counter during a currency exchange.

The viral video, uploaded by Instagram account @hello_gianyar, captures the staff counting Rp50,000 notes before handing them to the tourist. However, when the transaction seemed off, the tourist — reportedly from France — questioned the total amount.

A slowed-down version of the video clearly reveals how the money changer staff deliberately hid several bills, resulting in a smaller payout than agreed. The tourist can be heard saying the entire act was caught on camera and warning that he would report it to the police.

The video has since sparked widespread criticism online, with many netizens condemning the deceitful practice and expressing concern over its impact on Ubud’s image as a trusted and welcoming destination.

Officials also responded to the viral incident. “Such fraudulent acts not only harm tourists but also tarnish Bali’s tourism reputation,” said a representative from Antara, adding that money changers found cheating customers could face strict sanctions.
