Officials Thwart Attempted Smuggling of 11 Green Turtles, One Suspect Detained.
In a bold pre-dawn operation today, authorities in Bali successfully thwarted an attempt to smuggle eleven green sea turtles (Chelonia mydas) destined for the culinary market in Denpasar. The interception took place at the Java-Bali sea crossing monument in Cekik, Gilimanuk Village, Jembrana.
Agus Budi Santosa, the Head of the Bali Natural Resources Conservation Center (KSDA), shed light on the operation, revealing that the protected species were being transported by sea and were offloaded at the location for further ground transport to Denpasar.
The intervention was prompted by a tip-off from concerned citizens, exposing the widespread illegal trade in these safeguarded creatures. Acting swiftly, the Bali Water and Air Police Directorate apprehended a single suspect and seized 11 green sea turtles.
Santosa stated, “This arrest is based on a report from the public regarding the rampant circulation or trade of protected species, namely Chelonia mydas (green sea turtles) for consumption in the Bali region.”
Currently, the suspected perpetrator is in custody at the Bali Water and Air Police Command Post in Benoa, Denpasar, awaiting further legal proceedings. They face charges under Law Number 5 of 1990 Concerning the Conservation of Biological Natural Resources and Ecosystems.
Meanwhile, the rescued turtles have found sanctuary at the Turtle Conservation and Education Center (TCEC) in Denpasar. At this facility, they will undergo necessary care and attention, including health examinations and tagging, ensuring their well-being is prioritized.
