Regent Faces a Taxing Publicity Problem

GIANYAR

Gianyar regency’s revenue service is being probed over alleged irregularities in tax payments by non-government organisations, but Regent Tjok Oka Artha Ardnana Sukawati is not keen on the intervention.

“Hopefully what has happened is not fatal,” he said in response to questions about problems occurring in agencies in Gianyar during his term of office.

He said he did not like public intervention in the process because it reflected badly on his administration.

Vice regent Dewa Made Sutananya, who had led the search for defaulters and called revenue officials to ask for clarification, said he did not believe the situation resulted from fraud or official misconduct.

“The problem is just one of misperception or something like that. And if it is just miscommunication, of course it can be straightened out,” he explained.

Regent Sukawati said he was deeply shocked over reports that alleged irregularities in revenue. “We are now waiting for the legal process,” he said.
