BADUNG, Bali – A Bali ride-hailing driver has been widely praised after refusing to transport a foreign tourist who declined to wear a safety helmet, choosing to forgo the fare rather than compromise road safety.

The incident quickly gained attention after a video of the brief exchange between the driver and the prospective passenger circulated on social media.

The driver, Francisco Alves Godinho, calmly insisted that the tourist wear the helmet he had provided before the journey could begin. When the passenger refused, Francisco cancelled the trip.

“If you don’t want to wear a helmet, then please order a car, not a motorcycle,” he said.

His firm but measured response drew widespread praise on social media, with many users commending him for putting safety ahead of financial gain amid ongoing concerns about road safety and traffic discipline in Bali.

The incident also caught the attention of local authorities.

The Denpasar Traffic Police later invited Francisco to their headquarters to personally recognise his decision and present him with an appreciation award.

Denpasar Traffic Police chief Comr. Muhammad Bhayangkara Putra Sejati said Francisco had demonstrated the kind of responsibility expected from road users.

“We appreciate Francisco Alves Godinho for prioritising safety by refusing to transport a passenger who would not wear a helmet,” he said.

According to Bhayangkara, the driver’s decision reflected compliance with Indonesia’s traffic laws while protecting both himself and the passenger from unnecessary risk.

“His actions represent obedience to the Traffic Law and genuine concern for the safety of everyone on the road,” he added.

The police also encouraged both residents and visitors to always wear Indonesian National Standard (SNI) helmets when riding motorcycles in Bali.

“We hope this serves as a positive example for the public. Always wear a certified helmet whenever riding or travelling as a passenger on a motorcycle,” Bhayangkara said.

Originally from Belu Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Francisco may have lost a fare that day, but his decision earned widespread public respect—and official recognition—for demonstrating that safety should never be negotiable on the road.
