PERERENAN, Bali — Authorities in Pererenan, a coastal village in Bali’s Badung regency, have installed warning signs in Indonesian, English and Russian following complaints from residents about noisy motorbikes.
The signs urge riders to avoid loud motorcycle exhausts, as village officials seek to protect the peace of residential neighborhoods in an area increasingly popular with visitors.
Pererenan village head I Nyoman Sumartana said residents had raised concerns about noise from motorbikes fitted with excessively loud exhaust systems, according to Bali Post on Sunday, November 1.
Three signs were installed at separate locations during the previous week, with more planned as the village expands its awareness campaign. Officials chose the three languages to make the message accessible to both local riders and international visitors, and may add others in the future.
Sumartana said the campaign reflects the need to balance tourism activity with the everyday lives of people who call Pererenan home. The village is working with local communities to help communicate the message to riders, including foreign tourists.
He told Bali Post that he had noticed some improvement since the outreach began, although the change remained limited.
The village government emphasized that the signs are an appeal for considerate riding, not a new system of traffic penalties. Sumartana said village officials have no authority to impose fines for loud exhausts, as traffic enforcement falls under the police.
If further action is needed, the village may coordinate with police and report suspected violations, he said.
For now, officials are relying on multilingual reminders and community cooperation to reduce noise while keeping Pererenan comfortable for residents and visitors alike.
