Prosecutors Arrested over Ecstasy

JAKARTA ~ Two female prosecutors have been arrested for allegedly selling hundreds of ecstasy pills, an official said.

In the latest corruption scandal to rock the discredited Attorney General’s Office, prosecutors Esther Thanak, 40, and Dara Veranita, 37, were taken into custody on Monday, a spokesman for the prosecutors’ office said.

“We are thinking about suspending them from their jobs,” spokesman Jasman Pandjaitan said.

“It’s so regrettable that something like this happens while we’re trying to improve the image of the prosecutors’ office.”

The women are accused of selling 343 ecstasy tablets to a drug dealer, state news agency Antara reported.

Despite being illegal in Indonesia, ecstasy is widely available at nightclubs across Jakarta.

A prosecutor was jailed for 20 years and several others demoted last year in a bribery scandal that swept through the Attorney General’s Office.
