Illegally mined beach sand seized as evidence months ago by Klungkung Satpol (district security) is still piled up behind the regent’s office in Semarapura because Satpol doesn’t know what to do with it.

No one has come forward to claim the sand or to admit to its illegal status. And Satpol says it has no clear reference in local regulations as to how it should now proceed.

Klungkung’s Satpol chief, Komang Darma Suyasa, said this week it was not clear when or whether the sand could be disposed of under evidence rules, but he said he would consult regency leaders on what decision to make.

Someone has asked us if it is up for auction,” Suyasa said.

Stealing beach sand is an offence that would be tried at the district court, but there are no suspects to charge.
