DENPASAR, Bali – Alleged drug trafficking inside Kerobokan Class IIA Prison has once again come under the spotlight after Indonesian correctional authorities uncovered narcotics and other prohibited items during a surprise raid inside the facility.

The inspection was carried out by the Directorate of Security and Intelligence (Ditpamintel) under Indonesia’s Directorate General of Corrections (Ditjenpas) on May 20, 2026, at around 2 a.m. local time.

During the operation, officers discovered narcotics, drug paraphernalia, mobile phones, and alcoholic beverages in several inmate housing blocks inside Bali’s largest prison.

The findings led to the suspension of Kerobokan Prison warden Hudi Ismono. However, Bali Regional Office Head of Ditjenpas, Decky Nurmansyah, clarified that Hudi had not been dismissed from his position.

“We confirm that he has not been fired. He has been temporarily suspended,” Decky said on Sunday, May 24, 2026.

According to Decky, the suspension was imposed to ensure the ongoing investigation can proceed without interference. Several prison officers and guards are also being questioned by Ditjenpas’ internal security and compliance teams in coordination with Bali Police.

Authorities seized multiple prohibited items during the raid, although officials have yet to disclose the quantity or weight of the narcotics confiscated.

“The investigation is still ongoing. Further details will be announced later,” Decky stated.

Ditjenpas has also coordinated with National Narcotics Agency of Indonesia to expand the investigation into alleged drug distribution networks operating inside the prison.

The case has once again raised concerns over persistent narcotics trafficking within Indonesian prisons, particularly at Kerobokan Prison, which has repeatedly faced scrutiny over similar incidents in the past.

Authorities are now under pressure to prove whether the latest crackdown will lead to meaningful reforms and dismantle the drug networks operating behind prison walls.
