Jembrana schoolboy I Made Gita Narendra Kumara, 14, has been named as one of five junior high school students to Indonesia in the International Junior Science Olympiad competition (IJSO) to be held in Nigeria in December.

Narendra, second son of I Nengah Sugita and Ni Made Sutiari of Dangin Tukadaya, said of his selection from a field of 45 finalists: “I won a bronze medal in the National Science Olympiad (OSN) in Jakarta.”

He was selected third in the group to represent Indonesia in Nigeria.

The international competition tests students in mathematics, physics, chemistry and biology.

For Narendra, there is no special preparation necessary before he takes to the world stage – he will simply continue his regular mental training and study diligently. But he will be going to Bandung next week to start seven months of training with his teammates.

He wants to be a scientist and aims to be the best performer at the Nigerian meet. “My parents are very supportive,” he said.

He plays guitar as a hobby and is a fan of topline Indonesian group Slank.
