The General Elections Commission (KPU) has reported Jembrana Regent I Gede Winasa to Bali Police for interfering in the campaign for the regency election in December.
The move followed destruction of election billboards by Jembrana Satpol squads allegedly on Winasa’s orders. The KPU complaint said Winasa had disturbed and hindered the campaign phase of local elections in the district.
KPU chairman I Putu Dhiantara said last week Winasa had held up disbursement of funds, ordered an unnecessary review the election budget as a delaying tactic, failed to provide population figures as required and ordered demolition of political party and candidates’ election billboards.
“This is what we cannot accept because the billboards are there to inform electors,” Dhiantara said.
The KPU said this week the Jembrana elections – for regent and vice-regent – would still be held on schedule on December 27 with a second run-off round set for February 12.
