GIANYAR, Bali — Two American tourists triggered a dramatic car chase across Bali on Friday, July 4, 2025, after fleeing the scene of a traffic accident in Denpasar. The chase ended in Sukawati, Gianyar, where the pair were intercepted by angry residents and later secured by police.
The incident began around 11:20 a.m. on Jalan Antasura, Denpasar, when a Toyota Raize driven by the tourists suddenly braked while speeding, causing a motorbike ridden by 21-year-old Desca Rio Aditya from Lumajang to crash into their vehicle.
Instead of stopping, the tourists fled northward, passing through areas such as Pasar Mambal and Kengetan Ubud. Witnesses reported the car hitting other road users and damaging public property, escalating public anger.
The chase culminated on Jalan Bypass Prof. Dr. Ida Bagus Mantra in Ketewel Village, Sukawati. Enraged locals who had followed the vehicle for over 12 kilometers cornered and briefly assaulted the tourists before officers from Pos Zebra Ketewel intervened.
A video of the incident, which has since circulated widely on social media, shows the chaotic moment when the foreign tourists were surrounded by locals on the bypass road. The footage captures the crowd’s anger as the vehicle is stopped and the passengers are confronted.

Police identified the two as a male and female U.S. citizen temporarily staying at a hotel in Nusa Dua. The vehicle, a Toyota Raize, was a rental provided for hotel guests and registered to a resident of Munggu, Badung.
Authorities also secured a damaged Honda Vario DK 6186 AEC belonging to a Denpasar resident. Estimated losses include Rp100 million in car damage and Rp300,000 for the motorbike.
Despite the escalation, both parties agreed to settle the case amicably. The foreign tourists pledged to fully compensate for all damages.
Hotel security confirmed the rental arrangement and stated that coordination with the vehicle’s owner is ongoing. The two tourists remain under police supervision pending further investigation.

It was almost certainly the motorbike that initiated the conflict. The car had to brake suddenly according to the report or to evade another bike. The cluster around cars like dogs on a deer. The bikers became aggressive and destructive and the driver was afraid of the mob and fled. The video is very clear! I have witnessed this in Bali. Of course, they will extort money from the tourist and the aggressor will escape without taking any responsibility.
Savages.
