Garuda Indonesia, which as the national airline has the inside running on any special arrangements the government may dispense, now offers in-flight visas on its services from Sydney. This is a benefit already offered to Garuda passengers on flights from Japan and Europe and is good, so far as it goes.

The real problem in Bali is that the arrivals hall at Ngurah Rai is a shambles. It shouldn’t be. There are enough desks for passport-stampers. It’s just that there are never enough passport-stampers on duty.

That’s an administrative problem. It wouldn’t be solved by the obvious answer to visa queues, either – making tourist visas free on arrival.
