Clapboard: Moviegoers Accept Sandra Bullock’s Proposal

LOS ANGELES ~ Moviegoers said “I do” to Sandra Bullock’s new film The Proposal this weekend, propelling the romantic comedy to top spot at the North American box office.

The Disney story of a pushy Canadian boss who marries her assistant to keep her US visa pulled in US$33.6 million over the three-day period, according to box office tracker Exhibitor Relations.

The critically acclaimed adult comedy The Hangover, about a bachelor party gone awry in Las Vegas, slipped to second place with $26.7 million in receipts, increasing its three-week gross to $152.8 million.

The Pixar animated feature Up dropped down to third place, earning $23.5 million for the weekend. The movie, about a grumpy balloon salesman who flies off to South America, has grossed $226.3 million since its release four weeks ago.

Year One, about a couple of prehistoric hunter-gatherers (Jack Black and Michael Cera) on a romp through the ancient world, fared less well at the box office, taking in $19.6 million in its debut weekend.

The Taking of Pelhman 123, with John Travolta as the villain in this remake of a 1974 Hollywood classic about a subway hijacking, reaped $12 million in its second weekend. It has grossed $44.1 million so far.

The weekend take for comedy sequel Night at the Museum: Battle at the Smithsonian, now in its fifth week, came to $7.8 million.

Sci-fi blockbuster Star Trek remained in seventh place, beaming up $5.5 million to bring its gross to $240.3 million.

Land of the Lost, starring comedian Will Ferrell, dropped to eighth place from fifth with $4.4 million in box office receipts.

Imagine That, the Eddie Murphy family comedy, earned $3.3 million in its second week.

In 10th place was Terminator: Salvation, starring Welsh-born actor Christian Bale in the role of a post-apocalypse resistance leader fighting power-hungry machines. It took in $3.3 million on its fifth weekend out.
