Mt Batur, one of two active volcanoes in Bali, has been placed on alert for a possible eruption, one of 19 around the country now on heightened status.
The alert comes as Mt Merapi in Central Java continues to erupt and last week killed nearly 40 people living on its slopes.
An alert for Bali’s other volcano, the Hindu-revered Mt Agung, has not been issued, however.
Mt Batur, in northwest Bali, is a popular tourist attraction.
“With this alert status, the Centre for Volcanology and Mitigation of Geological Disasters forbids tourists and hikers from climbing to the peak of Mt Batur because it is dangerous,” said the centre’s Gede Bagiada.
