Strong Quake Hits Sumatra

JAKARTA ~ A 6.1-magnitude earthquake shook the Sumatran province of Bengkulu on Wednesday, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency said.

The quake hit at 13:29pm and was centered 227 kilometers southwest of Bintuhan in Sumatra, at a depth of 30 kilometers under the sea.

“The epicenter of the quake is off the coast. There is no report on any damage,” Bengkulu Police spokesman Y. Suyatmo said.

No tsunami warning was issued.
