UBUD ~ Students from the Universitas Pendidikan Nasional (Undiknas) Denpasar led a group of local residents and youth organization members in planting trees in Ubud’s Monkey Forest on Sunday.

According to officials, the project is part of a social service unit in the students’ curriculum, and they had been planning the project for over a month.

The coordinators for the program, Vimart and Noh Sabram, said the students planted 1,100 mahogany and teak trees all around the Monkey Forest.

Vimart said apart from the planting of trees, the project also entailed students from the university’s economics and legal departments assisting Padang Tegal village officials collect census data in the area.

Ubud village head I Made Wartana and head of Padang Tegal village I Made Darna said they were grateful for the students’ work to improve the Ubud area.

Students said they would be continuing their project on February 4, when they would hold a meeting about rubbish and recycling in Peliatan.
