JAKARTA ~ A Russian national held by kidnappers for nearly a week was freed and his captors arrested in a raid in Jakarta, police said.
The 37-year-old Russian man, identified by the Russian embassy as Alexander, was rescued on Wednesday from a house in Jakarta’s outskirts after he was abducted by a gang on arrival at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport on Friday, police detective Mohammed Iriawan said.
The victim had been convinced by his alleged kidnappers during online chats to come to Indonesia to open a clothing business, Iriawan said.
“He was escorted to a car on arrival at Soekarno-Hatta. There were two masked men in the car. He was beaten and brought to Serpong (outside Jakarta),” he said.
The alleged kidnappers made Alexander contact his wife in Russia and asked her to transfer US$60,000 in ransom to Indonesia.
Three alleged kidnappers were arrested in the raid, comprising one Indonesian, one Russian and one person of an unknown nationality.
“There is still one more kidnapper, an Indonesian, who we haven’t caught yet,” Iriawan said.
