MANOKWARI, West Papua — Police have arrested a 21-year-old man accused of attacking a Dutch tourist with a wooden stick in Manokwari, West Papua, after an encounter on a public road turned violent.
The tourist, identified as Yunus Deniz, 26, was travelling with his wife and another Dutch companion after visiting the Gunung Meja area in Amban on Sunday when they encountered the suspect and several other people.
Police said the suspect, identified by the initials PH, was believed to have been under the influence of alcohol at the time.
According to investigators, PH allegedly tried to stop the group and asked them for money. When the request was ignored, an argument followed.
The group attempted to continue on their way, but police said PH later attacked Deniz and his companions using a piece of wood.
Deniz fought back in an attempt to protect himself and the others, resulting in a physical confrontation that was captured on video and later circulated on social media.
The Dutch tourist suffered a cut to his left ear and bruising to his left arm. Police officers who arrived at the scene evacuated him for medical treatment and began searching for the suspect.
PH was arrested at a boarding house in Manokwari at around 2 a.m. on Tuesday, October 27, after a special police team located him.
He was taken to Manokwari Police headquarters for further questioning and legal proceedings.
Police said the case is being investigated under Article 466 of Indonesia’s Criminal Code.
