Mother in Deep Shock After Husband and Two Children Found Dead in Bali

DENPASAR, Bali — The mother of two young children found dead alongside their Australian father in Bali is in “deep shock and grief”, police said, as investigators continue to establish what happened inside the family’s bungalow in Kuta.

The woman was in Jakarta when she became concerned about her family during a phone call with her husband, 56-year-old Damien John Shaw, according to police.

During the call, she heard one of her children crying. The call was then disconnected, and Shaw could no longer be reached when she tried to contact him again.

She contacted a neighbour and asked them to check on the family at their bungalow in Kuta.

The neighbour contacted others and, together with the local community head, went to the property. After receiving no response from inside, they forced open the door and discovered Shaw and his two children, a six-year-old boy and a four-year-old girl, dead inside.

Police said the family had leased the bungalow since 2022.

Denpasar Police First Inspector I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya said officers had spoken with Shaw’s wife, but were unable to obtain a detailed statement because of her emotional condition.

“Kuta Police have spoken with the victim’s wife, but progress was limited as she remains in deep shock and grief,” Saputra Jaya said.

Police are continuing to investigate the deaths, including forensic processing of the property, reviewing CCTV footage from inside and outside the bungalow, and interviewing witnesses.

The three bodies have been taken to Prof. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah Hospital in Denpasar for further examination.

Authorities have not yet completed their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the deaths.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to the family of the three Australians who died.

“We send our deepest condolences to the family at this difficult time,” a DFAT spokesperson said, while declining to provide further details due to privacy obligations.
