Mother-Son Murderers Await Exceution

JAKARTA ~ A woman and her son are set to be executed for the murder of five members of a family in a revenge attack 20 years ago, an official said on Wednesday.

Attorney General’s Office spokesman Bonaventura Nainggolan confirmed the execution plan but refused to give details.

“We have arrived at the final preparations,” he said, adding that the pair had made a last request to see loved ones before they died.

Sumiarsih and her son, Sugeng, were found guilty in 1989 of the premeditated murder of five members of a single family in Surabaya, East Java province, the previous year.

The murders were an act of revenge over a business dispute.

Nainggolan said they had exhausted all avenues of appeal and their request for clemency had been rejected by the president in June.

Executions in Indonesia are by firing squad, usually carried out at night in isolated and undisclosed locations. The prisoner is notified at least 72 hours in advance.
