About one thousand people of Ababi Customary Village in Karangasem regency, Bali, were hunting rats that destroy the rice paddy.
“Rat pest has been very worrying for farmers, so the ‘krama’ (people) in here need to ‘ngropyok’ jro ketut (rats),’ said the Chief of Ababi Customary Village Made Sudiarta.
According to him, it has been a tradition in the village. The mass action is began with sound of ‘kulkul’ (bamboo bell) so that the villagers will gather at Pura Dalem in the village.
After praying, the people directly went to the rice field to hunt the rats. Moreover, the rats hunting also involved some villagers’ dogs.
The rats then were destroyed. “It has been disturbing us in the last five years,” said Nyoman Kuta, a farmer from Ababi village.
