Bukakak ceremony, one of the unique culture and traditions that exists only in North Bali, exactly in the Sangsit Village, Sawan District, Buleleng. So many cultures of ancestral heritage that is still well preserved in Bali. The purpose of this ‘Bukakak’ ceremony to pray to ‘Sanghyang Widhi Wasa’ (God) in its manifestation as the Goddess of Fertility in order to be given the fertility of agricultural lands to get abundant harvest. This tradition is only done in the area of ??Singaraja, if by chance you are in Bali and travel tour to areas such as the North Bali ,Lovina you can witness the ceremonial procession in April of Javanese calendar or full moon of ‘sasih kedasa’ according to the Balinese calendar.
‘Bukakak’ is suckling pig cooked just the chest part, this ceremony has been performed since ancient times and still exist until now, at the beginning this ceremony was done annually, but due to the costs, this ceremony is conducted every 2 years. This procession is parading ‘bukakak’ with all fixtures ceremony accompanied by ‘gamelan’ (traditional musical instrument) namely Tik Nong, which is believed to be a place for goddess of fertility, the parade is quite far, surrounding rice fields, and then to a temple named ‘Pura Desa’, a place of Dewi Sri / goddess of fertility. Bukakak bearers are divided into 2 groups, ‘bukakak’ bearers must be adult / married and teenagers for ‘sarat alit’.
The strange thing occurs when the ceremony takes place, after sprinkling holy water to the bearers, they are like having the power that exceeds the normal human strength, they roar, seems possessed by the spirit and unusual.
The preparation during the ceremony,
– Purifying of ceremony stuff
– Make ‘Dangsil’ in rectangle shape,from tree nut, with a series of bamboo decorated with old palm leaves strung with bamboo, decorated with old palm leaf, symbolizing Tri Murti (Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva)
– Hold ‘Ngusaba’ ceremony at the temple located in the local village
– Ceremony of ‘Gedenin’ in Subak temple.
