‘Keris’ Get UNESCO Recognition

Rector of Institute of Hindu Dharma Indonesia (IHDN) Denpasar, Prof Dr I Nengah Duija, MSI asserted, Keris as Indonesian heirloom has gained recognition as UNESCO’s world cultural heritage that has high philosophical value.

“Philosophy value includes superstructure strength (the universe), the value of the cosmological and value of authority,” he said in Denpasar on Friday.

According to Nengah Duija, Keris also has aesthetic value as complementary costumes, customs, culture and art, besides Keris also has high economic value, since it can be sell in accordance with the quality.

Keris Indonesia, including Bali gained recognition as a world heritage in various dimensions of human life that is a pleasure (hobby) and completeness of the implementation of the Hindu rituals.

It also demonstrated the superiority of culture, because Keris is a product of culture and as a symbol of human civilization on Earth that can survive until many centuries.

Nengah Duija added that Keris also reflects the value of friendship (solidarity) because it can be used as a souvenir across cultures, nations and religions.

Bali society up to now uphold the meaning and sacred value of a keris and held a ritual coincides with Tumpek Landep Day that is celebrated every 210 days, specifically perform sacred offerings for all types of sharp objects such as daggers and other weapons heritage.

Tumpek Landep for Balinese Hindus falls on last Saturday (16/5) to invoke the safety of the presence of God Almighty in its manifestation as a god of weapons in accordance to the use of equipment from iron, metal, silver and gold.
