GIANYAR, Bali — Two Russian nationals have been arrested after allegedly stealing pillows, decorative masks and other items from a villa in Gianyar, with police saying the pair simply wanted to keep the items because they found them attractive.

The two foreigners, identified by their initials AG and ZL, are accused of taking several items from Room 4 at Eden Estate villa in Banjar Tati Api Kaja, Pejeng Kawan village, Tampaksiring.

Gianyar Police Chief AKBP James Rajagukguk said the alleged theft occurred at around 4:30 a.m. on Sept. 23.

Among the items allegedly taken were pillows, wall-mounted decorative masks, a storage box, sofa cushions and other room decorations.

Police estimated the villa owner suffered losses of around Rp3 million.

Investigators said there was no indication that the alleged theft was linked to kleptomania.

“It was not kleptomania. They simply saw that the items were nice and were in the room, so they took them,” Rajagukguk said during a press conference on Sept. 29.

Police have not disclosed further details about how the alleged theft was discovered or how the two Russians were identified and arrested.

AG and ZL have been charged under Article 477 of Indonesia’s Criminal Code in connection with the alleged theft.

Police said the offense carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison.

The case was among 30 criminal cases handled by Gianyar Police during September.

Rajagukguk said police had increased preventive patrols, noting that several recent crimes in the area had involved foreign nationals either as suspects or victims.
