TVs and Radios to Stop broadcasting on Silent Day

All broadcasters in Bali to suspend broadcasting for 24 hours while Balinese Hindus celebrate the silent day or Nyepi Day on March 21, 2015.

“It is a form of respect for religious values and local wisdom on the island,” said Commissioner of Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPID) Bali I Nengah Muliarta in Denpasar on Monday.

He said the commitment to stop any broadcasts for a full day is also a concern over the use of energy-saving measures or energy conservation.

On the day, Hindus to hold ‘Tapa Bratha Penyepian’, the four prohibitions include not doing activities /work (amati karya), no lights or fire (amati geni), no traveling (no lelungan) and no pleasure (amati lelanguan).

“The commitment becomes an example of the broadcasting industries which are also able to realize a sustainable industry and environmentally friendly, “said I Nengah Muliarta.

Thus, the broadcasting industry is not only underlines the aspect of business, but also taking care and preserving the environment. This is in line with the implementation of Law on broadcasting, especially which states that the broadcasting is directed to maintain and improve the moral and religious values and national identity.

“The broadcast suspension during the day is basically just an encouragement for broadcasters, but the commitment to implement it give a great positive impact  deal in facing the energy crisis and global warming,” said I Nengah Muliarta.
