Kuta Overpass Draws Criticism

BADUNG ~ Controversy over the construction of an overpass at the Simpang-Siur traffic lights in Kuta continues.

The controversy stems from the Hindu belief that only God should be above one’s head.

A debate held last Wednesday in Denpasar included high priest Ida Pedanda Gede Made Gunung; developer of Jl. Layang overpass in Jakarta, Tjokorda Raka Sukawati; economic observer Dr. IGW Murjana Yasa; consultant I Dewa Gede Ngurah Swasta; and head of Bali’s Development Department Ida Bagus Sidharta.

During the discussion, officials discussed the root of the problem: more cars than ever are being driven on Bali’s roads, but there is still the same amount of road.

Sukawati suggested that one solution would be to build the overpass with a swing bridge, so road users would not have to pass underneath the flyover.
