Hundreds of Buleleng Voters ‘Registered Twice’

SINGARAJA ~ Buleleng residents voiced concerns about the organization of the regency’s election committee (KPU Buleleng) after hearing about 612 voters being registered twice, an official said.

Head of the election supervision committee in Buleleng Ketut Wiratmaja said volunteer supervisors had found the double registrations after checking 148 villages around the regency.

Wiratmaja admitted he was concerned and planned to talk to KPU Buleleng officials about keeping the election structured efficiently.

“This problem could cause serious disruption to the April 2009 legislative election. We have refused all names registered twice and asked the KPU to deal with them,” he said on Monday.

Head of KPU Buleleng Kadek Cita Ardana Yudi said the issue was easily solved.

“This is a typical human error that occurs during elections. Out of 480,420 registered voters in the regency, 612 is a very small number to make a mistake with,” Yudi said.

However, he said the KPU would be following recommendations from the supervision committee and would be reporting to party officials about progress in solving the problem.
