NUSA PENIDA, Bali — A foreign tourist was pulled away from the shore by a powerful wave at Kelingking Beach on Sunday before a jet ski guide rushed in and brought him back to safety.
Nandro, 30, was accompanying three domestic tourists on two jet skis when he noticed a foreign visitor standing near the water with a woman.
Moments later, a large wave struck the shoreline and dragged the tourist about 15 metres out to sea.
People nearby began shouting for help. Nandro turned his jet ski toward the man and headed into the surf, reaching him before he was carried farther from the beach.
He managed to get the tourist onto the jet ski and return him safely to shore.
Nandro later said the rescue was the second time in two days that he had helped a visitor in difficulty around Kelingking Beach.
The repeated rescues have renewed attention on safety at the popular Nusa Penida attraction, where visitors regularly descend to the beach despite heavy surf and powerful currents.
Klungkung Tourism Office head I Gusti Agung Gde Putra Mahajaya said beach supervision remains important and that his office has coordinated with relevant agencies over safety measures in the area.
The rescued tourist’s nationality has not been disclosed.
Kelingking draws large numbers of visitors for its steep cliffs and distinctive coastline, but conditions at the beach below can turn dangerous quickly when large waves reach the shore.
For Nandro, what began as a routine guiding trip became another emergency response within just 48 hours.
The back-to-back rescues have added weight to calls for stronger on-site supervision as visitor numbers remain high at the beach.
