Fishermen Await Disaster Compensation

KLUNGKUNG ~ Fishermen from Kusumba, Klungkung, complained to local government officials this week that they have yet to receive compensation promised to them for boats damaged by rough seas last month.

The fishermen said they had received nothing even though the damage had been inspected and they had completed the necessary paperwork.

According to the survey results from the Klungkung’s disaster inspection unit (Satlak), the fishermen should have received between Rp500,000 (US$45) and Rp1.5 million (US$137) each.

Fishermen also complained they had agreed to Rp500,000 each, but those who had received money had been given varying amounts.

Head of the local chapter of the Indonesian Fishermen’s Organization Gusti Lanang Mega Saskara admitted he had heard rumors that some fishermen suspected compensation money had ended up in officials’ pockets, but said the organization had nothing to hide.
