A British national has been sentenced to nine years in prison after being found guilty of storing around 1.4 kilograms of cocaine in Bali.

Baath Jarnail Singh, 53, was also ordered to pay a Rp1 billion fine in a verdict handed down by the Denpasar District Court on Tuesday (September 1, 2026).

The court found Singh guilty of possessing Class I narcotics weighing more than five grams.

The sentence was handed down by a panel of judges led by I Ketut Somanasa, with RR Diah Poernomojekti and I Putu Agus Adi Antara as members.

The court’s decision was lighter than the 10-year prison sentence sought by prosecutors. Prosecutor Finna Wulandari had also requested a Rp1 billion fine, with 190 days in prison as a substitute if the fine was not paid.

Under the court’s ruling, if Singh fails to pay the fine within one month, his assets can be seized and auctioned by prosecutors. If the proceeds are insufficient, the unpaid fine will be replaced by 190 days in prison.

The case began in December 2025, when Singh was allegedly instructed by a person identified as MIC, who is still wanted by police.

On December 20, MIC reportedly told Singh to travel to Bali to receive a package of narcotics that would be delivered to his accommodation.

Six days later, on December 26, two people arrived at the hotel where Singh was staying. They allegedly said they had been sent by MIC and brought a shopping bag containing cocaine and two weighing scales.

Singh was then allegedly instructed to keep the cocaine until it could be collected by a man identified as Muhammad Ali.

According to the case proceedings, Singh received Rp10 million in cash for living expenses in return for storing the drugs. He also allegedly received transfers of HK$2,000 from MIC between eight and 10 times.

The case came to light on February 14, 2026, when Denpasar Police officers raided Singh’s hotel room in the Legian area of Kuta, Badung, at around 10.50am.

Police found cocaine with a total net weight of 1,419.79 grams, or approximately 1.4 kilograms.

The evidence consisted of one package containing 10.59 grams of cocaine and four other packages with a combined net weight of 1,409.2 grams.

The court ordered all of the seized narcotics to be destroyed.

Singh was prosecuted under Article 609(2)(a) of Law No. 1 of 2023 on the Criminal Code, in conjunction with Law No. 1 of 2026 on Criminal Adjustments.
