Construction is soon set to start in Jembrana Regency of what are called Twin Towers – structures to rival Jakarta’s famous Monas or National Monument – officials said this week.

According to the blueprint, the towers are to soar to 116 meters high – one meter higher than the gold-tipped Monas conceived by founding president Sukarno – and be built upon 3.39 hectares of land in the western region of Bali.

The project will cost an estimated Rp795.4 billion (US$87.1 million) and got underway this week with the building of a jogging track around the site, said Jembrana government spokesman Dewa Putu Tilem, adding that besides being a recreational area and a landmark for the regency, the structure – slated for completion by the end of 2007 – would draw revenue from its dual function as a radio tower.
