Authorities Clamp Down on Aging Ferries

GILIMANUK ~ Two ferries operating from Gilimanuk on Bali’s western coast to Ketapang regency in West Kalimantan were suspended this week as the authorities continue their probe into unseaworthy vessels.

The ferries were around 30 years of age and were a hazard to passengers and other craft on the seas as their equipment was “out of date,” the Transportation Office in Gilimanuk said.

The owners had been given time to bring their vessels up to acceptable standards, it said, adding that other ferries were also under investigation.

Sea, land and air transportation has come under intense nationwide scrutiny this year following a string of disasters that left hundreds of people dead.
