KUTA, Bali — A 68-year-old Australian tourist was robbed of two gold chains worth approximately $14,400 by a motorcyclist while walking with his wife in the popular tourist district of Legian, authorities said Tuesday.

The incident, which occurred on the evening of Aug. 21, was captured on closed-circuit television (CCTV). Footage of the brazen theft has since circulated widely on social media.

Denpasar Police spokesman Capt. I Gede Adi Saputra Jaya confirmed the robbery, stating that the victim, identified by his initials RJB, lost two gold chains weighing 50 grams and 25 grams.

“Due to this incident, the victim suffered a financial loss of 225 million rupiah,” Adi said.

The mugging took place as the Australian couple walked back to their hotel after having dinner at a local restaurant. According to police, they walked past a man parked on a motorcycle, who was wearing a jacket resembling an ojek online (ride-hailing) uniform.

After the couple had walked a few meters past the suspect, the man suddenly approached RJB from the right side and violently snatched the necklaces from his neck. The assailant immediately sped away.

Kuta district police have launched an investigation to track down the perpetrator. Officers have secured the crime scene, gathered testimonies from the victims and witnesses, and are analyzing surveillance footage.

“Our investigative team has examined the CCTV footage showing the suspected perpetrator and is currently sweeping the area to retrieve additional footage,” Adi added.
