MATARAM, West Nusa Tenggara — Police have detained a hostel worker over the alleged rape of a British tourist in Kuta, Mandalika, Central Lombok.

The suspect, identified by his initials BI and also known as S, worked at a hostel in the area, according to West Nusa Tenggara Police.

Ni Made Pujewati, director of the West Nusa Tenggara Police’s Women and Child Protection and Human Trafficking Crimes Directorate, confirmed the arrest on Tuesday.

“We detained a hostel employee identified as BI, also known as S, who is suspected of committing sexual violence against a British national identified as MSG,” Pujewati said.

Police received a report concerning the alleged assault on Sept. 15 and launched an investigation.

“Based on the investigation and examination of witnesses, the case was upgraded to the investigation stage on Sept. 16, 2026. On Sept. 17, BI alias S was officially detained at the West Nusa Tenggara Police detention facility,” Pujewati said.

Police have not publicly disclosed a detailed account of the alleged assault.

Investigators seized several items as evidence, including a flash drive containing photographs and videos involving the suspect and the woman, a pair of black underwear and a white shirt.

Police also obtained medical examination reports from Bali International Hospital and the West Nusa Tenggara Police Bhayangkara Hospital.

BI has been named a suspect under Article 473(1) of Indonesia’s Criminal Code and Article 6(c) of the 2022 Sexual Violence Crimes Law, in conjunction with the 2026 Criminal Penalty Adjustment Law.

If convicted, he faces up to 12 years in prison and a maximum fine of Rp300 million.

The investigation remains ongoing.
