RAJA AMPAT — A Chinese tourist has been detained after allegedly spearing and eating a protected hawksbill sea turtle while visiting Raja Ampat, one of Indonesia’s best-known marine tourism destinations.

The man, identified by authorities as Wilson Shang, was initially detained by immigration officers at Sultan Hasanuddin International Airport in Makassar on September 14 as he was preparing to board a flight to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

He was later transferred for further examination in Southwest Papua as police began investigating the alleged wildlife offence.

According to Southwest Papua Police, the incident is believed to have occurred between September 8 and 11 near Keruwo Homestay in the Fam Islands, Raja Ampat.

Police said Shang allegedly used a speargun while diving in the area to hunt a hawksbill sea turtle (Eretmochelys imbricata), a protected species in Indonesia.

The case came to authorities’ attention after videos and photographs allegedly showing the activity circulated online.

Police said the available electronic evidence reportedly includes footage showing the suspect aiming a speargun at a turtle, followed by images of the animal being taken to a homestay and allegedly cooked and consumed.

A joint team has since conducted an underwater investigation around the reported location, while investigators continue examining electronic evidence, physical evidence and witness statements.

Southwest Papua Police spokesperson Commissioner Jenny S.A. Hengkelare said investigators were handling the case in accordance with applicable law.

The alleged incident occurred within the Raja Ampat marine environment, an area internationally recognised for its exceptional marine biodiversity and importance to conservation and tourism.

Authorities have not announced any final legal determination against Shang. Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the alleged hunting and killing of the protected turtle.

The case also underscores the responsibilities that come with visiting sensitive marine destinations, where tourism, conservation and local livelihoods are closely connected.
