Tourist’s Paragliding Mount Bromo Breaks Rules

MALANG, East Java – Paragliding Mount Bromo by a foreign tourist has sparked outrage after a viral video showed the prohibited activity inside the protected Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.

A 25-second clip uploaded on Wednesday, Sept. 10, by Instagram account @indonesian_mountains shows the tourist flying with an orange parachute near Mount Bathok, adjacent to Mount Bromo. Several bystanders dressed in white can be seen recording the unusual sight.

The ban on paragliding, along with drones and hot-air balloons, is reinforced by Letter No. 295/Perm/PDP-Tengger/X/2024 from the Paruman Dukun Pandita of the Tengger community.

The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park Office confirmed the act was unauthorized and violated conservation rules. According to witness testimony, the incident actually took place on July 30 in the Lemah Pasar area. The tourist’s identity remains unknown.

“All forms of paragliding and aeromodelling sports are prohibited throughout the park, including Mount Bromo,” said office head Rudijanta Tjahja Nugraha on Sunday, Sept. 14.

East Java Governor Khofifah Indar Parawansa also condemned the act, stressing that Mount Bromo is not only a tourist attraction but also a conservation zone and a sacred site for the Tengger people.

“There must be zero tolerance for activities that harm the environment, compromise safety, or undermine cultural values,” she said on Monday.
