Russian Woman Found Dead in Bali, Left Note Requesting Cremation

Police found a Russian woman dead at a rented home in Bali, with a note requesting cremation.

BADUNG, Indonesia — A 50-year-old Russian national identified by the initials VG was found dead at a rented house in the Kerobokan Kaja area of Kuta Utara, Badung regency, Bali, on Thursday morning, police said.

The acting spokesperson for Badung Police, Iptu I Ketut Sudana, said the woman was found hanging in the garage of the house at around 10:00 a.m. local time. The incident was first discovered by a local resident who worked at the property after noticing that the garage light was still on.

“When the witness went to turn off the light, she saw the victim hanging and immediately sought help,” Sudana said.

Officers from the Kuta Utara police station and intelligence unit arrived at the scene at around 10:45 a.m. and secured the area. A preliminary examination found no signs of physical violence on the body. However, police observed a rope mark on the victim’s neck, strengthening suspicions that she died by suicide, Sudana said.

Police also found a handwritten note inside the house. According to Sudana, the note expressed the victim’s despair over her life situation, worsening financial conditions and depression. In the note, the victim also requested that her body be cremated in Bali and that her ashes be scattered at sea.

The property owner told police that the woman lived alone and had previously received medical treatment for depression following crises and conflict in her home country, Sudana added.

Authorities secured several personal belongings at the scene, including about 60 million rupiah ($3,900) in cash, foreign currencies, two passports, a mobile phone and the note.

The body was taken to Prof. Dr. I.G.N.G. Ngoerah General Hospital in Denpasar for further procedures. Police have asked the property owner to contact the victim’s family or relatives overseas to complete administrative requirements.

“Kuta Utara police and Badung Police are currently finalising administrative procedures and coordinating with relevant parties,” Sudana said.
