DENPASAR ~ Drivers and motorcyclists have been warned that reckless behaviour on the roads may bring them a one-year prison sentence and a fine of Rp3 million (US$300).

Denpasar Traffic Police are set to inform people of offences and punishments under Public Transport and Traffic Law 22/2009 and to strictly penalise offenders, said a spokesman, Jaladri.

He also warned road users to ensure they always carried registration documents for their vehicles and their driving licences or they could face fines of Rp1 million ($100).

There also would be sanctions against vehicle owners who did not pay relevant taxes, such as road tax, he said.

Police had the right to remove licence plates from vehicles whose owners had not paid tax for two years. The licence plates could be assigned to different vehicles, said Jaladri.

He acknowledged some people were unaware of their obligations to pay vehicle taxes and said the community and local government would be targeted in an education campaign to explain the laws.
