No Efforts to Thwart Jokowi’s Inauguration: Intelligence

JAKARTA ~

Head of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) Lieutenant General Marciano Norman said there had not been any information to date on efforts to thwart the presidential inauguration of Joko Widodo.

“Based on intelligence data, there has not been any effort to thwart the presidential inauguration,” Marciano stated during his visit to the People’s Consultative Assembly in Jakarta on Thursday.

Chairman of the assembly Zulkifli Hasan as well as Deputy Chairmen Oesman Sapta Odang, Mahyudin, and EE Mangindaan met with Police and Military delegates, including TNI Commander General Moeldoko and Police Chief General Sutarman.

They discussed the security preparation for the inauguration of President Joko Widodo and Vice-President Jusuf Kalla.

Marciano noted that his institution has coordinated with several security agencies to maintain a peaceful atmosphere.

“Our efforts will be to ensure a successful inauguration day awaited by all Indonesians,” Marciano added.

The Intelligence Head reminded the leaders of the assembly to reach the venue in time to avoid unwanted issues.

“What we are worried about is the availability of the Chairman and Deputy Chairmen of the assembly. They must not reach late for the event as it might create issues such as intercepting or some other negative efforts. So please don’t come late, maintain your health and don’t fall sick,” Marciano remarked.

Joko Widodo and Jusuf Kalla will be inaugurated at the People’s Consultative Assembly complex on Monday, Oct 20.

After his inauguration, Jokowi will deliver a 7-minute speech and meet the state leaders at a banquet in the assembly building.

Meanwhile, President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono has expressed hope that all parties would give full and sincere support to president-elect Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to run his future government.

“Help our next president fully so that he can carry out his tasks well,” he said at a cabinet meeting here on Thursday.

President Yudhoyono is scheduled to hand over his post to Jokowi on October 20 after holding the office for two five-year terms.

Jokowi was the winner of the presidential election last July 9, beating his rival Prabowo Subianto. President Yudhoyono was not allowed to take part in the election by law because he has been in the post for two terms.

President Yudhoyono said that the future challenge to be faced by the new president was not light as the impact of current political competition would still linger on for some time in the future.

In view of that he said wisdom and good efforts need to be taken to unite various national elements who are not still apart.

President Yudhoyono also expressed hope that all state institutions could maintain tolerance, solidarity and harmony with regard to advancing the country.

The chairman of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), Zulkifli Hasan, has also called on all parties in the country to unite and stop all kinds of prejudice in connection with the inauguration of president-elect Jokowi and vice president-elect Jusuf Kalla on October 20.

“All elements must stop prejudices regarding the inauguration of president-elect and vice president-elect,” he said.

He said the inauguration event was a national agenda so that it must be made successful.

He assured that no sabotage and boycott would happen as rumored so far.

Following the presidential election the nation had been split with the Great Indonesia coalition of parties supporting Jokowi controlling the executive while the Red-White coalition supporting Prabowo Subianto controlling the parliament.
