DENPASAR, Bali – Bali is set to open its largest womens correctional facility in Antap Village, Tabanan District, in 2026. The facility, designed to house 1,200 inmates, is now in its second construction phase, according to Head of the Bali Provincial Directorate General of Corrections Regional Office, Decky Nurmansyah.

“The new prison, which will accommodate up to 1,200 inmates, is currently in its second phase of construction,” Decky said on Tuesday.

He explained the facility will help reduce overcrowding at the Class II-A Kerobokan Women’s Prison. “As of August 17, 2025, the Kerobokan prison housed 275 inmates, far exceeding its capacity of 120 — that’s 129 percent over capacity. Fourteen of the inmates are foreign nationals,” he added.

The prison is being built on a five-hectare site adjacent to the male-only Kerobokan Prison but will feature separate entrances and buildings.

According to the Bali Regional Office of Corrections, a total of 4,851 inmates were recorded across 11 correctional facilities in the province as of August 17, 2025. The most overcrowded is Kerobokan Men’s Prison, which holds 1,848 inmates despite being designed for only 810 — an excess of 236 percent.

Decky further noted that nearly two-thirds of inmates across Bali are serving sentences for drug-related crimes.
