JAKARTA ~ The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) signed an agreement this week with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to collaborate in the fight against graft, a spokesman said.

KPK chairman Antasari Azhar and FBI deputy director John Pistole signed the agreement in Jakarta on Tuesday on training and the exchange of information and investigators, KPK spokesman Johan Budi said.

Azhar said the two organizations were “like brothers in enacting the law, especially in the global fight against corruption.”

“The MoU (memorandum of understanding) is not just a document. The essence is to uphold the supremacy of the law,” Pistole said.

The KPK, which has launched several far-reaching corruption probes and won some high-profile convictions this year, has similar agreements with its counterparts in governments such as South Korea and Hong Kong.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono declared a war on graft in 2004.
