Jokowi Admits PPKM Social Restriction Ineffective to Curb Covid-19 Transmission

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo admitted that the enforcement of the government’s policy to restrict community activities dubbed PPKM was ineffective as the people’s mobility remained high which led to rising Covid-19 cases.

“Regarding PPKM which was valid on January 11-25, we have to say it is ineffective. The people’s mobility is still high so cases in several provinces are still rising,” said the President in a video aired by the Presidential Secretariat via its YouTube channel on Sunday, January 31.

He asserted that the policy was aimed at reducing or even preventing public mobility, and so it required firmness and consistency to obtain the desired results.

Thus, for the enforcement of the social restriction or PPKM volume II beginning January 26 to February 8, he ordered the Indonesian Military (TNI) Commander Marshall Hadi Hadi Tjahjanto, National Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo, and Religious Affairs Minister Yaqut Cholil Qoumas to take part in the policy. “I wish to hear the policy implementation in the field,” he added.

Jokowi also asked relevant parties to involve as many experts and epidemiologists as possible for the second phase of the PPKM. The collaboration between the governments and experts was expected to result in a better and more comprehensive policy.
