DENPASAR, Bali – An Australian man was found dead inside a Bali guesthouse in Denpasar on Wednesday afternoon (May 6), after staff checked on him when he failed to respond past check-out time.
The victim was identified as 77-year-old Kennet Leslie Sternes, according to local police.
East Denpasar Police Chief I Ketut Tomiyasa said staff first approached the victim’s room at around 1 p.m. local time to remind him about check-out. However, there was no response from inside the room.
Staff reportedly returned several times to check on the guest, but the man still did not answer.
Concerned that something may have happened, the guesthouse later called a locksmith to open the room at around 3 p.m. Once inside, staff found the victim lying on the floor.
Medical personnel were then contacted and confirmed that the man had died.
Police said an initial examination found no signs of violence on the victim’s body.
“Initial findings showed no indication of violence. The victim is suspected to have died due to illness,” Tomiyasa said.
Authorities found several personal belongings inside the room, including two mobile phones, a wallet, passport, identification cards, medication, and insulin. Investigators also noted signs of recent medical injections on the victim’s wrist and a catheter still attached to his body.
Based on preliminary findings, police estimate the victim had died around six hours before he was discovered.
The body was later evacuated to RSUP Prof. Ngoerah for further examination.
Police said they have coordinated with the Australian consulate to notify the victim’s family about the incident.
