Salient: Believed to be the first Chinese temple in Bali, Caow Eng Bio is an imposing sight among the maze of lanes and alleyways of traditional Balinese buildings along the water’s edge in Benoa, southern Bali. “Inside the temple, there’s a record of families donating to its development back to the 1600s, written on a rock in Chinese,” treasurer Wayan Putra told the Bali Times. Praying at the newly renovated temple is thought to make wishes come true, and people from other religions, including Bali’s majority Hindu faithful, flock to the place of worship, said Wayan.
