Quake Strikes Papua

JAYAPURA

A moderate 5.6-magnitude earthquake struck Papua province on Wednesday morning, seismologists said, but no tsunami warning was immediately issued.

The quake struck at 8:56am, 231 kilometres west of Jayapura at a depth of 15 kilometres, the US Geological Survey said.

Indonesia sits on the Pacific “ring of fire,” where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
