A huge earthquake measuring 7.8 on the Richter scale jolted areas of North Sumatra early on Wednesday, seismologists said.

The region was on alert for signs of tsunami generation.

Wednesday’s temblor on the quake-stricken island occurred at 5:15am local time, 49 kilometres west of the island at a depth of 46 kilometres.
